Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the correlation among self-esteem, human rights sensitivity and the perception of patients’ rights of cadets in Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy.
Methods: The data were collected from 208 cadets with structured questionnaires in August of 2018 and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program.
Results: The average of self-esteem, human rights sensitivity and the patients’ rights awareness of participants were 2.60±.28, 3.39±1.27 and 4.70±.38 respectively. The cadets reported the highest score on the right of migrant workers and the lowest score on the right to privacy among the six episodes. In respect of the perception of patients’ rights, the cadets reported the highest score on the right pursue human worth and dignity and right to equality and the lowest score on the right to know and make autonomous decision. Human rights sensitivity was significantly different in gender, grade, clinical practice experience and education experiences in regards to human rights. There was statistically positive correlation between the sensitivity of human rights and the awareness of patients’ rights.
Conclusion: It is required to design a more efficient nursing curriculum so that cadets enhance human rights sensitivity and awareness regarding patients’ rights.
